Sustained UV of that kind is what oxidises a clear coat, chalks trim and takes the depth out of a dark colour, and cheap protection is exactly what fails under it. A ceramic coating bonds to the paint and absorbs that load instead, and on a vehicle that collects dust off a dirt drive it does something more immediately useful too: the dust sits on the coating rather than keying in, so the wash becomes a rinse.

The hardest UV we work in

It is worth being concrete about what sustained backcountry sun does, because it explains where the money goes.

The clear coat oxidises. That is what makes a dark vehicle look flat rather than glossy, and it is a chemical change in the paint rather than dirt on top of it. It polishes out — but a clear coat is only so thick, and it can only be corrected so many times before there is nothing left to correct.

A coating is the sacrificial layer that takes that instead. The order matters: correct the oxidation first, then coat. Sealing a coating over an already-flat clear coat locks in the problem for the life of the coating.

The same applies to anything embedded in the paint. If it feels gritty rather than dirty, it needs removing before the coating goes on, not after.

Dust, and where the work happens

Fine dust is what spoils an application, and a dirt drive produces it whenever anything moves. A coating needs a clean, covered space to cure in, so a garage, a shed or a swept-out barn is what we would ask for — on Ramona properties there is usually one, even if it is currently full.

If there genuinely is nothing covered, say so when you book rather than on the day. We would rather have the conversation early than turn up and find the only option is the open drive in the middle of the afternoon.

We are out seven days a week, 7am to 7pm, covering Ramona from Main Street out along the 67 and the 78 and into the properties either side. Long drives, gate codes and tight turnarounds are all normal. We cover Valley Center, Escondido, Lakeside, Santee and Maderas on the same runs.
