Ceramic coating in Tierra Santa

That sustained UV is what oxidises a clear coat, chalks the trim around it and takes the depth out of a dark colour, and it is precisely what a ceramic coating absorbs on the paint's behalf. Up here it is doing more work per year than the same coating would down at the coast, which is why it is worth more.

We are an authorized Opti-Coat installer and we fit coatings across Tierra Santa, from the Santo Road side across the neighbourhoods towards Mission Trails. Being inland and up on the mesa, we get fewer of the windy afternoons that make coastal work awkward. Tiers run from one year up to five with Opti-Coat Pro.

Relentless mesa sun

The exposure up here is the defining local fact and it decides both the tier and the timing.

What sustained UV does is oxidise the clear coat. That is the change from a deep colour to a flat one, and it is chemical rather than dirt, which is why washing does nothing and polishing does. A clear coat is only so thick and can only be corrected so many times, so slowing the process is worth more than repeating the correction.

The order matters: correct first, coat second. Sealing a coating over an already-flattened clear coat locks the problem in for the life of the coating.

On timing, a coating goes on best on cool panels in a covered space. In midsummer an early appointment, or better still a garage bay, is what gets a proper result — on hot paint in direct sun the coating flashes off before it can be levelled.

Covering the mesa

We are out seven days a week, 7am to 7pm. Tierra Santa sits between two freeway corridors, so plenty of the cars we coat here are commuters picking up road film on the 52 or the 15 twice a day. That film is oily and it bonds to bare paint, which is why the maintenance saving after a coating is so noticeable on a car like that.
