What each package actually includes
The names sound similar. What separates them is the amount of work, so it is worth knowing what you are buying.
Mini Detail, from $139
The maintenance option. A full hand wash with deionized water, touchless blow drying, wheels detailed and tires dressed, a thorough vacuum, and a wipe down of the dash, door panels, console, door jambs and windows.
This is the “keep it right” service, not the “fix it” service. It suits a car that was properly detailed a couple of months ago and needs bringing back to sharp.
The deionized water matters more than it sounds. Ordinary San Diego tap water is hard, and hard water leaves mineral deposits when it dries in the sun. Deionized water has those minerals stripped out, so the car dries without spotting.
Exterior Detail, from $179
Everything in the Mini Detail plus a clay treatment, hand-applied wax giving around three months of protection, and UV protectant on the trim.
The clay treatment is the step people underestimate. Washing removes what is sitting on the paint. Claying pulls out what is bonded into it: rail dust, industrial fallout, overspray, the gritty texture you can feel when you run a hand over paint that looks clean. Wax applied over contamination just seals the contamination in.
Interior Detail, from $189
Deep cleaning of the whole interior, carpets and mats shampooed, leather cleaned and conditioned, dash, door panels and console cleaned and dressed.
This is the package that transforms a family car. Ground-in crumbs, spilled coffee, sunscreen residue on the door handles, dust baked into the vents. It is also the one that matters most for resale, because interior condition is the first thing a buyer reads as “cared for” or “not”.
Complete Detail, from $259
Interior and exterior together, which is the package most people actually want. Hand wash, blow dry, wheels and tires, clay treatment, plus the full interior deep clean with carpets shampooed and leather conditioned.

Why vehicle size changes the price
Every step scales with surface area. A full-size SUV has more panels to wash and clay, more glass, more carpet to shampoo, and more seats to clean than a coupe. The $40 to $90 step from smallest to largest is labor time, not a size surcharge.
Trucks sit oddly in the middle. A truck has less interior than a full-size SUV but more exterior, which is why truck pricing lands above compact SUV on exterior work and just below full-size SUV overall.
What is not included in the headline price
Three things commonly sit outside a standard detail, and a shop that pretends otherwise is setting up an awkward conversation in your driveway.
Paint correction. Removing swirl marks and scratches is machine polishing work, priced separately after inspection. A detail cleans and protects. Correction repairs.
Heavy contamination. Pet hair woven into carpet, smoke odor, sand ground into every seam after a summer at Mission Beach, or a spill that has soaked into the foam. These add time and are quoted on what the vehicle actually needs.

Is a detail worth it against a $15 tunnel wash?
For price alone, obviously not. The comparison only makes sense over time.
Automatic tunnel washes clean with spinning brushes that have already touched hundreds of dirty cars that day. Those brushes carry grit, and grit dragged across clear coat leaves the fine circular scratches called swirl marks. They are why so many dark cars look hazy in direct sun.
Swirl marks are not free to remove. Correcting them is machine polishing, which costs more than several years of proper detailing would have. So the honest framing is not “detail versus tunnel wash”, it is “pay for careful washing now, or pay for correction later”.
