Why the quotes you collect differ so wildly
Three variables explain almost all of the spread, and none of them is the detailer’s postcode.
What is actually included. This is the big one. “Detailing” is not a regulated term. One operator means a wash, a vacuum and a spray wax in forty minutes. Another means a hand wash with deionized water, clay treatment, machine work, shampooed carpets and conditioned leather across half a day. Both advertise detailing. The price gap is the work gap.
Vehicle size. More panels, more glass, more carpet. The step from coupe to full-size SUV is typically $40 to $90 within a package.
Condition. Standard pricing assumes a normally dirty car. Pet hair woven into carpet, sand from a summer of beach trips, smoke odor or a spill soaked into the foam all add time and get quoted on inspection.
Does mobile cost more than a shop?
The instinct is that someone driving to you must charge for the privilege. At Smith Bros that is not how it works. The same package is the same price whether the vehicle is at the shop or on your driveway in San Marcos.
That is worth confirming with any operator you call, because travel surcharges by zip code are common in the industry and they are not always mentioned until the invoice.
What mobile does change is your time. A shop appointment costs you the drive there, the wait or a second trip, and the drive back. For a service measured in hours, that is often the larger cost.
There is one genuine constraint. Longer-life ceramic coatings need a controlled environment while they cure, so those happen at the shop or at your place if you have a garage. Standard detailing has no such requirement.

A real mobile operation carries its own water supply and its own power. It does not need your hose, your outlet or your driveway to slope a particular way. If someone asks to plug into your garage and run your tap, they are running a domestic setup rather than a professional one, and the water they use will be your untreated hard water rather than the deionized water that prevents spotting.

What it costs beyond a standard car
The figures above cover coupes through full-size SUVs. Plenty of vehicles sit outside that range, and the pricing model changes for them.
Motorcycles are priced below cars, starting at $399 for ceramic coating, reflecting the much smaller surface area.
RVs and boats are priced by the foot rather than by category, because a thirty-foot motorhome and a forty-five-foot one are genuinely different jobs. Ceramic coating for these runs $65 to $95 per foot depending on the tier. A detail on a large motorhome is a multi-day job.
Trucks and commercial vehicles follow the standard size bands for a single vehicle, but fleets are handled differently, since scheduling several vehicles in one visit is more efficient than separate appointments.
If your vehicle is not a standard car, expect the quote to come after a conversation rather than off a price list. That is not evasiveness, it is the only way to be accurate.
What “detailing” includes that a wash does not
The clearest way to understand the price gap is to look at the steps a wash leaves out.
Clay treatment. Washing removes what sits on the paint. Claying removes what has bonded into it: rail dust, industrial fallout, overspray. If paint feels gritty after washing, this is the step that was skipped.
Deionized water. Ordinary tap water in San Diego is hard, and hard water dries into mineral deposits that etch clear coat in the sun. Deionized water has the minerals removed so it dries clean.
Touchless drying. Air drying is the main cause of water spots. Blow drying removes water without dragging a towel across the finish.
Protection. Hand-applied wax gives around three months of easier cleaning and UV resistance. A wash leaves nothing behind.
Interior depth. Shampooed carpets and conditioned leather are different work from a vacuum and a wipe down.

Cost per visit is only half the picture. What most people want to know is the running cost of keeping a car looking right.
A common pattern here is a Complete Detail two to four times a year with maintenance washes between. For a sedan that is roughly $560 to $1,120 a year at the full-detail end, less if you mix in Mini Details.
Cars that live outside need the higher end. - Vehicle type and size. Coupe, sedan, compact SUV, truck or full-size SUV. This sets the base price.
- Inside, outside, or both. The single biggest factor after size.
- Anything unusual. Pet hair, smoke, sand, spills, heavy tree sap. Say it upfront.
- What you want afterward. Protection that lasts three months is a different service from protection that lasts five years.
A detailer who asks these questions before quoting is going to give you an accurate number. One who quotes a flat price without asking anything is quoting a wash.
